I Put a Bowl of Baking Soda in My Refrigerator for 30 Days. Here's What Actually Changed

Most of us open the refrigerator several times a day without thinking much about the air inside. Yet over time, leftovers, vegetables, cheese, and sauces can combine to create lingering odors that seem impossible to remove. I'd heard countless people claim that keeping an open bowl of baking soda in the fridge could solve the problem, so I decided to test it for an entire month.

I placed a small bowl filled with fresh baking soda on the middle shelf and left everything else exactly the same. I didn't clean the refrigerator first because I wanted to see whether baking soda alone could make a noticeable difference.

During the first week, there wasn't a dramatic change. The refrigerator still smelled like a mixture of different foods whenever I opened the door. But after about ten days, I realized the strong onion and leftover food odors had become much less noticeable. The refrigerator smelled cleaner overall, even though I hadn't changed my shopping or cooking habits.

The experiment also taught me something important. Baking soda doesn't remove the source of unpleasant smells. A forgotten container, spoiled produce, or spilled sauce will still create odors until they're cleaned up. The baking soda simply helps absorb some of the odor molecules floating in the air.

Experts generally recommend replacing the baking soda every month because it gradually loses its ability to absorb odors. A fresh box works much better than one that's been sitting in the refrigerator for several months.

After thirty days, my conclusion was simple. The trick didn't perform miracles, but it did help keep the refrigerator smelling fresher between cleanings. Combined with regular maintenance, wiping shelves, checking expiration dates, and throwing away old leftovers, it became an inexpensive habit worth keeping.

Sometimes the simplest household habits are the ones that last the longest. A small bowl of baking soda won't replace good cleaning, but it can be a useful partner in keeping your refrigerator smelling fresh every day.
