I Started Putting Ice Cubes in My Washing Machine Once a Week. The Results Surprised Me

Household tips spread across social media every day, and most disappear just as quickly as they appear. One that kept showing up claimed that tossing a handful of ice cubes into an empty washing machine before running a short cleaning cycle could help loosen residue, reduce unpleasant odors, and leave the drum looking cleaner. It sounded unusual, but it also sounded harmless enough to test.

For four weeks, I tried the method once every weekend. I added a cup of ice cubes to the empty drum, selected a warm cleaning cycle, and let the machine do the rest. I did not expect dramatic results, but I was curious whether there would be any noticeable difference.

After the first couple of washes, the drum seemed fresher than usual. There was less of the musty smell that sometimes develops after several loads of towels or workout clothes. However, I quickly realized that the improvement probably had less to do with the ice itself and more to do with running an empty maintenance cycle regularly. Any machine benefits from occasional cleaning.

The experiment also reminded me how easily detergent residue can build up. Around the rubber door seal, I found small amounts of trapped lint and soap that had probably been there for weeks. Cleaning those areas by hand made a much bigger difference than the ice cubes ever did.

Laundry experts generally agree that regular maintenance matters far more than viral shortcuts. Leaving the washer door open after each load, wiping the door seal, cleaning the detergent drawer, and running the manufacturer's recommended cleaning cycle are proven ways to reduce mold, mildew, and odor. Those habits provide long-term benefits without relying on internet trends.

By the end of the month, my conclusion was simple. The ice cubes did not appear to damage the machine, but they also did not perform any miracle cleaning. The biggest improvement came from paying attention to routine maintenance rather than the ice itself. Sometimes a viral hack simply encourages a good habit, and that habit is what actually delivers the results.

If you want your washing machine to last longer and smell fresher, focus on consistent cleaning instead of looking for one magical trick. A few minutes of regular maintenance will almost always outperform the latest social media experiment, keeping both your machine and your laundry in better condition for years to come.
